Concussion baseline testing
A concussion baseline test is a neurocognitive assessment that is typically administered to athletes or active individuals, but can be administered to anyone. The test measures an individual's cognitive function, such as memory, reaction time, and processing speed, and serves as a baseline measurement of their normal brain function. If a person sustains a head injury, they will typically retake the test to assess any changes in cognitive function. The results of the post-injury test are then compared to the baseline test to determine the extent of the injury and guide treatment decisions.
What to expect
A concussion baseline test typically includes a variety of measures, such as:
An initial baseline of cognitive functions that can be used as a benchmark in the event of a concussion or head injury.
Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT): a computerized test that measures cognitive function, including memory, reaction time, and processing speed
Use these assessments with your care provider and Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC): a test that assesses cognitive function, including orientation, memory, and concentration
It's important to note that a concussion baseline test is not a diagnostic tool, but rather a way to establish an individual's normal cognitive function, which can be used for comparison if the individual sustains a head injury.
